The Collection of War Photos

by Marta Syrko

Lviv-based photographer Marta Syryko works in conceptual photography and explores physicality through her photographic projects.

Marta’s newest project depicts soldiers with amputations, which the viewer sees as similar to ancient sculptures: “This is how I wanted to show the invaluability and pricelessness of the military and thank them for protecting us,” the artist shares.

Dmytro was severely wounded during a combat mission; 70% of his body sustained burns, and his lungs and hearing were damaged. Doctors initially gave him a very small chance to survive.

He continues his long road to recovery while dreaming of his future, which includes starting a family and building a home life. Given a 20% chance of surviving his injuries, he succeeded.

Stanislav worked as an airplane operator with no military experience prior to Russia’s invasion. After the war began, he joined the army. Trained in combat positions, he was responsible for shells in the artillery howitzer system.

Stanislav sustained shrapnel wounds to his legs. After being evacuated and hospitalized, he underwent two surgeries, including the amputation of his right leg. A man has since learned to walk with a prosthesis and made plans to rejoin his fellow soldiers at the front.
