Soldier Andriі Nikonchuk bravely defended the Kyiv hydroelectric powerplant (HPP) and was posthumously awarded the title Hero of Ukraine

On February 24, the first day of the war, the Russian military tried to destroy the Kyiv HPP with their aircraft. As part of an anti-aircraft missile unit, Andrii courageously defended Kyiv’s strategic object. Destruction of the Kyiv HPP would have had dire consequences for the Ukrainian capital. The Ukrainian military fought all night and managed to repel the enemy’s attack. However, one of Russia’s cruise missiles exploded at an anti-aircraft unit’s position. Andrii died, posthumously becoming a Hero of Ukraine. His brother and grandmother were waiting for him at home.
