Leading Ukrainian ballet dancer Oleksandr Shapoval was killed on the battlefield

Oleksandr Shapoval, 47-year old, volunteered to the ranks of the territorial defense of Kyiv in the first days of the full-scale Russian invasion. Later, he joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine and operated a grenade launcher.

On September 12, Shapoval died in a battle near Mayorsk in the Donetsk region under Russian mortar shelling.

Oleksandr Shapoval was an Honored Artist of Ukraine and a ballet soloist of the National Opera of Ukraine, where he performed for 28 seasons. Shapoval also taught dance at the Kyiv State Choreographic School.

“He will be remembered by those who were lucky enough to work with him on stage, by those whom he taught and to whom he imparted the incomprehensible secrets of creating a ballet image, and by grateful viewers,” – the National Opera of Ukraine wrote.
