Russia’s unprovoked war of aggression has forced thousands of Ukrainians to take up arms to defend their country and freedom at the cost of their own lives.

43,000 Ukrainian servicemen have been killed since February 24, 2022, according to a statement by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. “Since the beginning of the full-scale war, Ukraine has lost 43,000 soldiers who died on the battlefield. 370 thousand cases of assistance to the wounded, and this is taking into account that in our army approximately 50 percent of the wounded return to service, and all wounds, including light and repeated ones, are recorded,” Zelenskyy wrote

Earlier, during a press conference on February 25, 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy disclosed information on Ukrainian losses for the first time since February 2022. At the time, 31,000 Ukrainian defenders were killed in the two years of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Ukraine marks the Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of Ukraine on August 29. This day was established by a decree of the President of Ukraine in 2019. There are also plans to establish the National Military Memorial Cemetery, where defenders will be buried with honors. The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine passed the corresponding law in May 2022, and in 2024, the place for the Cemetery was set in the Hatne community of Fastiv district, the Kyiv region.

Russian military losses in the war exceeded 750,000 people and far outweighed those of Ukraine. This number includes 198,000 Russians killed and more than 550,000 wounded.

According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, since September 2024, Russia has been losing people on the battlefield at a ratio of 5 or even 6 to 1. “This is how they want to grab more land before the world’s pressure on them becomes unbearable,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote.
